Tucked away down a back road in the south of Spain lies Castillo de Almodóvar. At less than 30 minutes from Cordoba, it is definitely worth a visit. Fans of the HBO series Game of Thrones may recognize the castle from its appearance in season 7 as Highgarden.
Like many of the structures in southern Spain the castle started life as a Roman fort. The castle went through several renovations and reconstructions mostly during the middle ages. A final renovation took place in the early 1900s leaving the current structure which is mostly of Moorish Berber origin.
The castle played an important role in Cordoba’s history. Its location above the river Guadalquivir, which used to be passable to larger vessels, made it an ideal position to control river access to the city.
The castle features a total of 9 towers, most of which are accessible to visitors. The towers combined with the natural high ground tho castle sits on make for excellent views of the surrounding area.
The castle is open to visitors year-round and at only 9€ for adults its money well spent.
